Ferris File-a-Wax Carving Waxes, used for making models to be reproduced by the lost wax casting process. They can be sawed, filed or carved. Will stand rough handling and will not soften in your hands. Available in three degrees of hardness, designated by color, and in a variety of shapes.
Wax Qualities:
There are three main types of waxes for carving and casting in varying degrees of hardness. Hardness is indicated by color: blue, purple, or green.
Blue wax is softer and more flexible than green or purple wax. It can be hand carved and machines well when appropriate wax burs are used. It is the most flexible of the three and can be worked to very thin pieces without breaking. It holds a fair amount of detail and is great for less intricate designs and rounded surfaces. It can be filed easily and polishes well for casting.
Purple wax is a medium-hard, general-purpose wax. It can be hand worked or machined. It has some forgiving qualities, holds a decent amount of detail and has good filing qualities.
Green wax is very hard and can’t be flexed. It holds an amazing amount of detail and is ideal for making sharp edges and for intricate carving and engraving. It machines well, can easily be polished and takes a nicer finish than blue or purple wax but can become brittle if worked to a thickness of 1/16” (1mm) or less.
